Shelter Island Residence

This expansive estate required a complete master plan for the entire property, along with numerous detailed designs for specific areas. The property is a family retreat as well as a frequent venue for events, so the design had to be comfortable and accommodating for a wide range of situations. In addition to a completely new pool area, the design also included a full outdoor kitchen, bocce court, and a productive farm with cutting garden.

The overall plan creates several new areas on the property for entertaining, relaxing, and cultivating nature. A pollinator garden crafted with Long Island native plants supports local fauna while also creating privacy for the spa. We also developed a half-mile nature trail system.  Within these coastal trail areas our project restored several acres of forest, replacing countless invasive plants with native species.

We included numerous custom details throughout the property, such as a natural log pergola repurposed from downed cedar trees, and a stone compass referencing the site’s maritime history, both designed by local artists. We also integrated a new 3,000 square foot chicken coop into the site to support the working farm and vegetable gardens. Native perennial gardens sweep throughout the property providing year round interest. The new design removed any need for pesticides and maintains a fully organic maintenance program.

Overall, the design created an ecologically focused sanctuary where site sensitive details were championed and design features fit seamlessly in a natural context.  built environment.
