Wise Towers

New York, New York
We completely overhauled the landscape at Stephen Wise Towers, originally built in 1965 for the New York City Housing Authority. The 2.7 acre complex was provided funding to improve living conditions and the quality of life for all residents. Through on-site interviews and community meetings we were able to target key aspects of the site that needed improvement or complete renovation, while preserving the historic art on site which makes the space unique. The design maximizes play experiences for all ages and all abilities, while also providing a delightful place for caregivers and others. Focusing on a wide variety of play options, we wanted to give each child, teen and adult the opportunity to explore, create, grow and learn at their own pace.

For many public housing sites, the exterior plays a key role as an outdoor living room, recreation zone, and meeting place. Residents of all ages need these areas to exercise, socialize, and enjoy nature. Landscape has the potential to play a critical role in residents’ wellness, and we have worked to enhance those benefits wherever possible. We also took this opportunity to make the site more sustainable, in terms of ecology as well as required maintenance.
