Upper West Side Rooftop
New York, New York
Manhattan views inspired the design of the rooftop gardens at this Upper West Side Cooperative. Geometric bands of paving mimic the stone and concrete buildings. The vast open shape of the rooftop encouraged Dirtworks to create “rooms” within the existing layout by using paving patterns to designate programmatic areas, while furniture, planters, and green roofs help delineate the spaces. Wood decking warms the space by creating a textural change in the hardscape.
In the main lounge space, large planters anchor the seating and dining areas, while trees create dappled light and shade. Terrace plantings – including a multi-stemmed Birch tree grove, ornamental grasses and flowering perennials – frame views of the iconic and ever-changing New York City skyline. The planting design echoes the feel of an urban perennial garden; with careful attention to make the space feel personal while appealing to a variety of tastes. Plantings were selected to complement the powder coated aluminum totems throughout the garden.
The brightly colored light totems help conceal structural pipes while also creating beautiful shadow patterns as a lighting feature. Wood screens further conceal existing equipment. Green roofs help mitigate urban heat island effect and collect stormwater.
Residents enjoy the rooftop space year round.
