Courtyard Garden

New York, New York
Our private courtyard garden in located in the historic district of Sutton Place. The landscape reflects the history and legacy of the site; Rosario Candela, the prolific early twentieth century architect designed the building. The garden balances formal geometry with more subtle meandering paths, a refined plant palette and extensive stonework. Reclaimed 200 year old bluestone make up a series of terraces, set against a framework of stacked bluestone walls which were designed to mitigate the steeply sloped site. A sweeping double bluestone stair is anchored by 19th century Italian limestone fountain.

The woodland walk, anchored by the focal point magnolia, creates an ADA accessible trail through woodland plantings, shrubs, and native flowering trees. The meandering walk guides visitors to the upper lawn area for lawn games and relaxation. Massings of Dogwoods, Redbuds and Plum trees create peak and reveal moments. A hedge of Cherry Laurels establishes a year-round green armature, while screening the neighboring public park.

The South Garden, with a planned completion for spring 2022, is grounded by a natural wood pergola, reclaimed brick patio and massings of flowering perennials.
