The Club at Briarcliff Manor

Briarcliff Manor, New York

This continuing care retirement community located in the historic Kings College property serves an active elder population. Clusters of independent living apartments, assisted housing residences, and skilled nursing units provide community residents with a dynamic landscape that is able to respond to their changing needs.

The rich landscape heritage of Westchester County inspired this master plan, including hardwood forests, meadows, orchards, rock outcrops, and fieldstone walls. The hilly terrain creates two distinct landscapes, each defined by a diverse native planting palette, but unified by consistent detailing.

The sites designed to actively encourage the formation of communities among residents. At the lower site, a selection of indigenous trees define each housing cluster, creating a unique neighborhood identity within the larger community. In the parkland areas beyond, landscape is used to establish distinct areas for residents explore, while maintaining the privacy of the various neighborhoods.

The uphill site is surrounded by dense woodland. A series of elegant courtyards, terraces and gardens, some intimate, some grand with expansive views, serve as gathering areas for the community. Ground floor private terraces are screened with trellises and lush plantings, while a spacious, secure garden serves the skilled nursing units, providing specific support to their work.
