Center for Discovery Health Campus

Harris, New York
The Center for Discovery is guided by a mission of enriching lives through personal accomplishment, and offers innovative educational, clinical, and social experiences for individuals with multiple disabilities, medical frailties, and Autism Spectrum disorders. Dirtworks developed a site masterplan that supports this mission by providing spaces for equestrian therapy, food production, walking, and active recreation.

The facility was built on the grounds of a former industrial agriculture site. By reusing this brownfield, the project spared nearby farmland and reclaimed a previously damaged landscape. Native trees, shrubs, and grasses help restore the site’s biodiversity, and the landscape surrounding the facility is now used for farming and grazing. Bioswales provide an economical way to manage parking lot runoff with minimal environmental impact. The Health Center, a 27,000 square-foot diagnostic and treatment facility is the first licensed medical facility in New York State to implement green building standards that meet the Department of Health requirements. Dirtworks has continued to provide master planning and landscape architectural services on a variety of projects including the development of sustainable management protocols.
