Ramapo College of Nursing

Ramapo, New Jersey

The new Adler Center for Nursing Excellence provides a state-of-the-art teaching and research space for Ramapo College’s growing School of Nursing. Prominently sited at the terminus of the main campus entry the building and surrounding landscape create a new identity for the campus. The landscape design features a new “grand stair” as part of the arrival experience. Connecting the entry drop off circle to the main campus, the stair incorporates an exterior seating area for casual socializing and small group activities and offers dramatic views of the surrounding countryside. With two-story high glass walls, the Center’s lobby and interior stair are linked to the adjacent exterior stair and seating area, melding indoor and outdoor student activities. A grove of seasonally interesting trees engage the drop off area, frame the seating area and strengthen the connection to the campus beyond. The Adler Center addition creates a new upper courtyard, which features two monumental sculptures by American artist Ned Smyth. The sculptures create a pedestrian portal to the academic core and also frame views of the countryside. Native plant materials and paving materials link the new landscape to the existing campus.
