Culture can be expressed through our relationship with nature; it defines our values, our hopes and aspirations, and our sense of identity. The underlying intent for Dirtworks, PC’s proposal for the international design competition to re-envision the Mapo Oil Reserve Base in Seoul, was to celebrate a sense of individual and collective identity through the lens of restoring nature.
Dirtworks’ approach to the Mapo landscape creates a partnership between design and nature to promote health at every scale—individual, community, and environmental. An autogentic approach to design and urban regeneration can help to create sustainable, vital, and resilient environments that may also provide the resources to build individual health and strengthen a sense of shared purpose and community.
