DIRTWORKS, PC WINS 2019 SARA NY DESIGN AWARD OF HONOR
Dirtworks returned to Battery Park for another of the Society of American Registered Architects, New York Chapter (SARA NY) 2019 awards. It was an honor to be a part of the talented and innovative professionals of the night. Our project, Resilient Dunescape, received an Honor Award.
The coastal community of Sea Bright suffered significant damage during Hurricane Sandy, intensifying the need for sustainable and resilient design responses. Beginning with a flat, barren site, vulnerable to flooding from the Atlantic Ocean and Shrewsbury River, this house and landscape were designed together. The house is lifted 12’ above the road and placed within a new dune-scape. Primary and secondary dunes were created to guide floodwaters through the landscape and provide low areas for water infiltration and storage during flood events. This hydrodynamic maneuver helped us to sustain a dune ecosystem on a fragile barrier beach. Here, we trust, is a fusion of nature and architecture: poetry in the practical.
Special thanks to SARA NY for a lovely night and RAAD Studio for collaborating!
